The Caribbean region is the northernmost part of the Colombian territory, a region full of charm, culture and joy. Dominated by flatland, yet containing the only snow-capped mountains facing the sea in the world, generating a variety of climatic zones and flora and fauna.
Burning deserts facing the blue sea, vast plains suitable for rice farming and where the ancient 'Zenues' braided fibers in two colors to create our national symbol, the 'sombrero vueltiao'. Ancient stone walls remind us of the courage of a people and the sea of seven colors underneath a green moon.
This is the Colombian Caribbean region, a purely agricultural and livestock region although we find one of the world's largest open-pit coal mine in La Guajira, not to mention the huge reservoirs of natural gas that are part of the regional and national economy. Another economic potential is tourism, with spectacular beaches parks such as Parque Tayrona and cities like Cartagena.
The Caribbean region also has the most varied cuisine in the country, each department having various culinary delights to show for it, including sea food dishes due to the proximity to the coast. Handicraft comes as varied as the food and culture, each department having its characteristic products such as the 'Arhuacas mochilla' (traditional handbag) in Magdalena and Valledupar, the Wayuu Manta (traditional dress) in La Guajira and the aforementioned vueltiao hats in the savanna.
The Caribbean region is a great exponent of Colombian culture and the birthplace of Colombian writers such as Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, David Sanchez Juliao, Juan Gossain, exponents of music like Shakira, Carlos Vives, Totó la Momposina and others.
In conclusion the Caribbean region is a magical land full of natural wonders, beautiful people and a vast cultural wealth showing the happy face of this wonderful country, Colombia.
